Blepharoplasty

Eyelid surgery or blepharoplasty is performed to improve drooping eyelids and/or puffiness or bags around the eyes. Blepharoplasty may be performed on the upper eyelids, lower eyelids or all four lids. Typically, the surgeon makes incisions following the natural lines of the eyelids to minimize the visibility of any scarring. In upper blepharoplasty, a fine incision is made in the lid crease above each eye; in lower blepharoplasty, it is made through the conjunctiva. Working through these incisions, the surgeon removes excess skin and muscle, as well as fat (puffiness). The incisions are closed with fine sutures, which generally dissolve within two weeks.

Blepharoplasty may be medically necessary in some cases and may be covered by medical insurance when performed for improvement of impaired vision.
