The month of February has been designated as Macular Degeneration Awareness Month. Our doctors & staff at Grin Eye Care are committed to making sure our patients are well-informed on all things related to ocular health, including important information about Macular Degeneration. Here some helpful facts that you may not know about Age Related Macular Degeneration (AMD):
- AMD is the leading cause of vision loss among people over the age of 65.
- AMD affects 1 in 8 people over the age of 60.
- AMD is more common than glaucoma.
- Early detection is key when it comes to managing AMD, which is why it is so important to always schedule your annual eye exam.
- There is no treatment for early AMD.
- Family history is an important factor with AMD because it is a genetic disease.
- Smoking cigarettes is the largest modifiable risk factor for developing AMD. Many studies have shown that smokers have double the risk of developing AMD compared to non-smokers.
- The early stages of AMD often do not cause any symptoms; another reason why annual comprehensive eye exams are crucial.
- Eating a healthy diet is key! Foods rich in antioxidants, omega-3 fatty acids, Vitamin C & E and beta-carotene can help reduce the risk of AMD. Fruits, veggies, walnuts and fatty fish (such as salmon) are all great sources of these nutrients.
- AMD affects that part of the retina called the macula, which is responsible for our sharp, clear central vision. Early symptoms of damage include distorted and blurred central vision.
