You may have seen our previous post about the OrCam. For patients with central vision loss due to AMD (Age Related Macular Degeneration) or other causes, the OrCam can really help regain a sense of independence. Especially when the ability to read has been lost.
Another technology that we want you to know about is home vision monitoring for patients with AMD. Clinical trials have shown this technology to be effective at catching changes early, which results in better response to treatment and better visual outcomes.
We use two different systems that can help track your vision for changes and that will alert us if there is a change. MVt is a smart-phone based app that is quick and easy to use any time on your smartphone. The app should be used approximately two times per week. The other is a desktop unit called the ForSee Home. Depending on insurance carrier and which unit is right for you, it may be covered by insurance. The ForSee Home is generally covered by insurance/Medicare for the majority of the cost, and sometimes in its entirety. Even if it is not, the cost is well worth the piece of mind to know that your eyes are stable and that if there is a change, your doctor will be alerted. Early detection and early treatment result in the best outcome for your vision.
If you or someone you know could benefit from this amazing technology, please call us today to set up an appointment with our own "OrCam Expert", Kelli, in Leawood. We look forward to hearing from you!
